An activist group that has helped defeat several amnesty bills says the White House’s new 70-point immigration plan – which asks for concessions from Democrats in exchange for allowing “Dreamers” to stay in the U.S. – would be the death of the nation.
The White House proposal – seeking to fulfill promises that got Trump elected – includes completing the border wall, more deportation agents and cracking down on sanctuary cities, chain migration, unaccompanied minors and visa overstays.
Among its 70 points are 39 improvements to enforcement and 27 regarding border security. At least four more address the legal immigration system.
“Anything that is done addressing the status of DACA recipients needs to include these three reforms and solve these three problems,” a White House source told the Washington Times. “If you don’t solve these problems then you’re not going to have a secure border, you’re not going to have a lawful immigration system and you’re not going to be able to protect American workers.”
The Times said the proposed changes “break serious new ground … giving federal agents more leeway to deny illegal immigrants at the border, to arrest and hold them when they’re spotted in the interior, and to deport them more speedily.”
But William Gheen, the president of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, believes it would all be for naught.
He argues the cost would be a surge in Democratic Party voting rolls through granting residency and a path to citizenship to “Dreamers,” the children of migrants who came to the U.S. illegally.
The left-wing candidates they would elect, Gheen contends, likely would refuse to fulfill promises being made now.
The White House’s proposals, he told WND Monday, are “so much meaningless sugar to make the amnesty poison go down.”
“We live in a country where our existing border laws are meaningless. Why would anyone believe that new laws would help?”
Gheen said the left-wing activists ultimately want the crime of illegal entry into the U.S. lifted.
It the activists ever achieve that objective, he said, it will mark the beginning of the end of the U.S.
Then “permanent control” of the U.S. through its elected officials will fall to “people like [left-wing billionaire activist George] Soros.”
“Those [illegal aliens] are the key to the permanent overthrow of the United States. Once they’ve been given any form of legal status, it’s over,” Gheen said.
He charged that the Trump administration is betraying its promise to enforce immigration laws by throwing the status of the “Dreamers” into the legislative mix.
He recalled Obama promising that any immigration-reform plan would include enforcement of the law and requiring immigrants to learn English and pay taxes.
But in the middle of a bill backed by Obama, Gheen said, was a clause allowing Washington “to waive all the enforcement requirements and apply amnesty to an unlimited number of illegals.”
That plan failed in Congress.
The Washington Times report said Democrats previously supported many of the proposals in the White House’s new 70-point plan.
But not now.
“Please do not put the burden on the Dreamers to accept every aspect of comprehensive immigration reform to get a chance to become citizens of the United States,” Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., told the Times.
Trump’s Cabinet, however, is lined up behind the plan, with Attorney General Jeff Sessions leading a chorus of supporters.
“This plan will work. If followed it will produce an immigration system with integrity and one in which we can take pride,” Sessions said.
“Perhaps the best result will be that unlawful attempts to enter will continue their dramatic decline. I applaud President Trump and urge Congress to listen to the American people and swiftly pass these commonsense proposals into law. The Department of Justice stands ready to continue making our neighborhoods and communities safe and secure again.”
However, WND previously reported that moves by Trump to grant amnesty, however limited, likely would upset his base.
Opposition from Trump’s supporters arose after the president met Sept. 13 with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. The Democratic leaders reported they were working with Trump to make DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program launched by Barack Obama, permanent.
DACA was an Obama executive order that delayed prosecution and deportation for the children of illegal aliens.
Trump issued an executive order Sept. 5 cancelling Obama’s order. But Trump is allowing six months before the cancellation takes effect to give Congress time to come up with a legislative solution.
