Lawmaker: Brexit should make Americans consider opting out of United Nations

On the heels of the British exit from the European Union, Republican Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie is pushing for an “Amexit” from the United Nations.

Massie is cosponsoring legislation first introduced in 2015 called the American Sovereignty Restoration Act. If passed, the bill would accomplish an “Amexit” from the United Nations and remove the international body’s headquarters from New York.

“Time for ‪#‎amexit? I’m a cosponsor of H.R. 1205 to get the US out of the UN. ‪#‎brexit,” Massie wrote on Facebook.

The U.S. currently spends about $8 billion a year on mandatory payments and voluntary contributions to the UN, money Massie wants to freeze for the sole purpose of facilitating “termination of United States membership and withdrawal of United States personnel and equipment.”

From the bill:

Upon termination of United States membership, no payments shall be made to the United Nations or to any organ, specialized agency, commission or other formally affiliated body of the United Nations, out of any funds appropriated prior to such termination or out of any other funds available for such purposes.

The bill would also eliminate any future possibility of the U.S. military serving under UN command and terminate diplomatic immunity for UN members in the United States.

The biggest reason for severing ties with the UN, Massie said, is to ensure U.S. sovereignty.

“As a member of the UN, we bind our citizens to decisions made by undemocratic countries, when in fact our Constitution should be the supreme law,” Massie said.
