Prayers for Paris

WASHINGTON – “Prayers for Paris.”

That was the simple but heartrending message posted on Facebook by Rep. Louie Gomert, R-Texas, as the bloody jihadist attack was still underway in the capital of France, with at least 35 reported dead and up to 100 people taken hostage.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, echoed those thoughts, posting, “Horrific reports coming out of Paris. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people of France — our oldest ally.”

“Once again we’ve seen an outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians,” said President Obama, calling it an “attack on all of humanity and the universal values we share.”

Speaking briefly to reporters in the White House, Obama stated, “We stand prepared and ready to provide whatever assistance that the government and people of France need to respond.”

“This is an attack not just on Paris, it’s an attack not just on the people of France, but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share,” he added.

The president said the administration has been in touch with French officials but he had not yet called President Hollande, “because my expectation is that he’s very busy at the moment.”

Obama stated he would not speculate about the rapidly developing situation and did not take questions.

Other lawmakers weighed in on twitter.

“The horrifying reports coming out of #Paris are a reminder of why we must remain vigilant. The U.S. stands by our allies in France. Prayers,” tweeted Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C.

Rep, Bob Goodlatte, R, Va.: “My prayers are with the city of Paris and the French people for safety and healing.”

Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash,: “Praying for the victims and their families in Paris.”

Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C.: “Prayers with Paris, those being held hostage and the families of those killed. Heartbreaking.”

Democratic presidential candidate and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley: “Heartbreaking news from Paris. Praying for the country and its people.”

Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio: “Tonight’s attacks in #Paris are appalling..We stand by our allies.”
