WASHINGTON – It’s got to be causing some uncomfortable moments between President Trump and his transportation secretary, Elain Chao, the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Trump turned to Twitter Thursday to challenge McConnell to repeal Obamacare – as he promised for seven years Republicans in the Senate would do if they only got control of the upper house – or else.

“Can you believe that Mitch McConnell, who has screamed Repeal & Replace for 7 years, couldn’t get it done. Must Repeal & Replace ObamaCare!” Trump tweeted.

Then, later Thursday, Trump left it to the imagination of the American public exactly what he was suggesting. Was he calling for McConnell to step down?

“If he doesn’t get repeal and replace [of ObamaCare] done, and if he doesn’t get taxes done, meaning cuts and reform, and if he doesn’t get a very easy one to get done, infrastructure, if he doesn’t get them done, then you can ask me that question,” President Trump told reporters at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey, after they asked him if McConnell should resign.

Asked to clarify his comments, Trump said, “Ask me that question. Let’s hope he gets it done.”

At least Trump didn’t threaten McConnell with “fire and fury.”

Also Thursday, Trump tweeted: “Mitch, get back to work and put Repeal & Replace, Tax Reform & Cuts and a great Infrastructure Bill on my desk for signing. You can do it!”

On Monday, McConnell had cited Trump’s inexperience in government: “Now our new president has of course not been in this line of work before. And I think had excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the democratic process.”

And by Wednesday, Fox News host Sean Hannity, a strong supporter of the president’s agenda, called McConnell “weak” and “spineless” and urged the 75-year-old senator to retire.
