Be afraid: DHS chief says if you knew what he does about terror ‘you’d never leave the house’

Homeland Security Secretary Gen. John Kelly said that terrorism is “everywhere” and “constant,” suggesting that an attack on the U.S. could happen at any time .

Kelly made the remarks during an appearance on Fox and Friends Friday.

“I was telling [Fox host] Steve [Doocy] on the way in here, if he knew what I knew about terrorism, he’d never leave the house in the morning,” he said.

Kelly noted cited the recent attack on the U.K. in addition to attacks that have recently occurred in Egypt, the Philippines and Indonesia,  all carried out by “generally the same groups,” to back his point.

“It’s everywhere. It’s constant. It’s nonstop. The good news for us in America is we have amazing people protecting us every day. But it can happen here almost anytime.”

Kelly’s remarks come as police in places like New York City and Las Vegas are ramping up security measures in response to chatter about possible terror plots against Americans.

While government vigilance against terror threats is certainly warranted, Kelly’s “never leave the house” language is a little extreme. And for Americans worried about government agencies using the threat of terror to grab more power to violate citizen privacy and other civil liberties, it should be at least a little worrisome.
