During a news conference Thursday, President Donald Trump slammed the nation’s media establishment for covering his administration dishonestly. The media, he contends, is unfairly attacking him in a bid to protect the “entrenched power structure” he’s attempting to take down.
Trump excoriated the national media during the conference for attacking national security advisor Michael Flynn based on information garnered from leaks and unnamed sources. Flynn’s resignation, the president said, came as the result of an organized attack on his administration carried out by establishment operatives.
“The media’s trying to attack our administration because they know we are following through on pledges that we made and they’re not happy about it for whatever reason,” Trump said during the event.
The president added that press reports linking his administration to Russia amount to fake news.
Because of the level of “dishonesty” in the media, the president said he’s prepared to bypass the press.
“I’m making this presentation directly to the American people with the media present — which is an honor to have you this morning — because many of our nation’s reporters and folks will not tell you the truth,” Trump said. “And will not treat the wonderful people of our country with the respect that they deserve.”
Trump’s remarks were met with criticism from the national news media.
MSNBC’s Chuck Todd accused the president of being “un-American” for accusing the national press.
“Press bashing may feel good to folks but when it’s done by people in power, it’s corrosive. Take off your partisan hats for a second,” he said via Twitter.
CNN’s Jake Tapper called the president’s presser “unhinged” and “wild.”
The reactions prove Trump’s point.
“The tone is such hatred,” Trump said. “I’m really not a bad person, by the way. No, but the tone is such — I do get good ratings, you have to admit that — the tone is such hatred.”
The media will continue attacking Trump– but if they continue to make accusations against the president without providing Americans proof beyond leaked documents and unnamed sources, their credibility will continue to erode.
What we’re witnessing now is a bitter media establishment desperately trying to sway public opinion against Trump, as it failed to do during the 2016 election.
